Back to school often means new routines, fresh stationery, and of course, heavier backpacks. What many parents don’t realise is that the way a child carries their bag can have a big impact on their posture, comfort, and even how well they focus in class.
When a backpack is too heavy, worn on one shoulder, or hangs too low, children often compensate by leaning forward or to one side. Over time, that can create tension in the back, neck, and shoulders, and sometimes even lead to headaches or fatigue. For growing kids, these small changes in posture can quickly add up.
There are a few simple ways to protect your child’s spine as they settle into the new school year. Choose a backpack with two wide, padded straps to distribute weight evenly. Encourage them to wear both straps rather than just one. Make sure the bag sits snugly against their back instead of drooping low, and pack the heaviest items closest to the spine to reduce strain. Remind them to clear out anything they don’t need that day so they aren’t carrying unnecessary weight.
Because children are still growing, it’s especially important to keep an eye on how their bodies are adapting to the demands of school life. Regular check-ins with a chiropractor can help ensure their spine and nervous system stay healthy and balanced.
